FYI:

"I've just had the nice Scottish lassies from the ODTR's office back
on to me. As of last Friday (and no, I don't know what changed last
Friday) you DO NOT have to buy your ADSL CPE (customer premises
equipment - modem, router or whatever) from Eircom. Eircom was very
apologetic that I had been told this today by one of their staff and
it was all just a misunderstanding.
So if you're ordering ADSL you don't have to buy a modem or router
from Eircom (but they still advise it for compatibility yada yada
yada). If you get a sales droid who says that you do, point out to
him that the ODTR has confirmed that you do NOT have to buy any
equipment from them."

>> True. But eircom is a big company. It does get some things right.
It's somewhat like Microsoft : they do good mice, you just wish
they'd try to get the sofware right.

Ogg:
"The Ogg Vorbis format came out far ahead of MP3, MP3Pro, RealAudio
Surround, and Windows Media 9 Beta in a comparison of different audio
formats by Germany's respected computer magazine c't. More than 6,000
people took part in the test. Heise says Ogg's dominance was most
pronounced with 64 kBit/sec samples; the full magazine article (out on
Monday) mentions that in pre-tests, some people actually mistook the
128 kBit/sec Ogg samples for the uncoded version. Let's hear it for
those strangely named open source file formats!"

"Ironically, at the same time, the ANC was reeling from universal
criticism in a backlash over use of the word "Zanufication." Earlier
in the year, Communist Party deputy leader Jeremy Cronin had
responded to leftist criticism by Canadian academic John Saul in
Monthly Review magazine by conceding, in an obscure web interview,
that the ruling party leadership suffered authoritarian Mugabe-style
tendencies that included silencing genuine left critiques"

"Relatives of the victims of the September 11 attacks brought a packed

anniversary, with calls against a war on Iraq. The meeting was one of
many addressed by relatives of those who died but who are opposed to
military action in retaliation."
